Urban Food Forests: How Restoration Ecology Can Transform Our Cities

When most people think about ecological restoration, they picture forests, rivers, wetlands, or remote natural landscapes. But some of the greatest opportunities for restoration may actually exist in the middle of our cities.

Vacant lots. Empty lawns. School grounds. Parking lot edges. Business campuses. Apartment complexes. Public parks.

As a restoration ecologist in the Pacific Northwest, I believe urban landscapes represent one of our greatest opportunities to address biodiversity loss, climate change, and food security at the same time.

Traditional landscaping often prioritizes appearance over ecological function. Large expanses of turf grass require irrigation, fertilizer, mowing, and ongoing maintenance while providing minimal habitat for pollinators and wildlife.

Restoration-based landscaping asks a different question:

What if every landscape could perform multiple ecological functions?

Instead of empty lawns, we can create landscapes that:

  • Produce edible fruits, herbs, and vegetables

Cities like Seattle, Detroit, Chicago, Montreal, and Los Angeles have demonstrated that even densely developed neighborhoods can support productive green spaces.

Many urban areas already possess the infrastructure needed for expansion:

  • Public parks

  • School campuses

  • Municipal compost programs

  • Vacant properties

  • Green roofs

  • Stormwater facilities

  • Corporate campuses

Instead of viewing these as isolated projects, we can begin connecting them into functioning ecological networks.

Our region values conservation, native ecosystems, sustainable agriculture, and innovative environmental design. Many native plants are already well adapted to local conditions, reducing irrigation needs while providing habitat for birds, pollinators, and other wildlife.

Businesses, schools, homeowners, municipalities, and developers all have opportunities to rethink underutilized landscapes.

Whether restoring riparian habitat, replacing invasive species, designing pollinator gardens, or developing edible landscapes, every project can contribute to healthier ecosystems.

Urban food forests, native landscapes, and ecologically designed public spaces won't solve every environmental challenge. But they represent practical, proven solutions that improve biodiversity, strengthen communities, and make our cities healthier places to live.

The landscapes around us already have tremendous potential. Sometimes the first step toward restoration is simply seeing them differently.
